Elder Abuse is...
the mistreatment or neglect of an older person.

      Elder Abuse is...
         A CRIME

Most victims of elder abuse are:
* Women over the
   age of 75.
* Persons with one
   or more disabilities
.

People who are abusers of the elderly often have:
*mental/emotional
  problems.

*substance abuse
  issues.
*financial difficulties
*large amounts of
  responsibility or
  life stress.
They may also have experienced abuse themselves as children or as spouses.


What kinds of abuse are there? 
How Can I tell if someone I love is experiencing this?

Physical Abuse is an intentional infliction of physical pain or injury by a person caring for an elder.  Symptoms may include cuts, bruises, burns, or unsanitary conditions.

 




Neglect
occurs when the caregiver (or even the elderly person him/herself) does not provide proper attention

Abandonment is also a form of abuse.  Abandonment is the desertion of an elderly person by the caregiver under circumstances in which most people would continue to provide care.
Sexual Abuse is any non-consensual sexual contact with an elder.  Symptoms may include STD's, genital, or anal infection, painful urination and bowel movements.

Psychological/Emotional Abuse is the infliction of mental suffering on an elder.  Methods of this type of abuse include verbal assaults and threats, humiliation, intimidation, and isolation.  Possible symptoms include helplessness, fear, withdrawal, denial, and depression.

Financial Abuse is the misusage
or theft of the older person’s funds. Possible indicators of this include unusual activity in the older person’s bank account, signatures on checks that do not resemble the older person’s handwriting, numerous unpaid bills, living in conditions that are not explained by the elder’s income, missing personal belongings, and deliberate isolation by a caregiver.
